Lunt Solar Systems, a leading manufacturer of dedicated solar telescopes, is now accepting pre-orders on its new, affordable dedicated 40mm H-alpha telescope. H-alpha telescopes filter out all of the Sun’s light except that emitted by hydrogen atoms (hydrogen-alpha or H-alpha) in the solar chromosphere. This allows viewing of prominences and other features that are ordinarily overwhelmed by the blinding light of the Sun’s photosphere, the white light that lights our days. Aimed squarely at competing with the long-popular Coronado PST, Lunt’s latest offering features a 40mm f/10 dedicated H-alpha telescope with a 5mm blocking filter (upgradeable to 6mm or 12mm), and a full aperture, tunable etalon that provides a 0.65 Angstrom bandpass. Once the province of solar observatories, H-alpha telescopes are increasingly popular among observers coming over to solar observing from the dark side. Lunt hasn’t announced a delivery date yet, but it will be a welcome addition once it sees the light of day.
